The Ghana Maritime Authority is pleased to bring to the notice of the Seafaring community and the general public the upcoming celebration of the Day of the Seafarer (DotS) on June 25, 2018.

With this, we would like to wish the BRAVE men and women who put their lives on the line to ensure continuity in shipping and enhanced global economic development, “A GOOD DAY AT SEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Day of the Seafarer is a United Nations observance day.

DotS gained International recognition in a resolution adopted at the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila that revised the then existing STCW Convention, to throw a brighter light on the unique and immensurable contribution seafarers from all over the world add to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole.

“The resolution "encourages Governments, shipping organizations, companies, ship owners and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully".

This year the International Maritime community is focusing on the wellness, most importantly the mental health of the Seafarer as he/she is away on the world’s waters. This is vital because STRESS has been identified by researchers to be an underlying factor to human errors leading to maritime accidents.

“Seafarers wellbeing”

The chosen theme for 2018 Day of the Seafarer is "seafarers' wellbeing". With this the Ghana Maritime Authority is encouraging all Maritime stakeholders to come up with defined strategies that will reduce stress and other issues affecting seafarers' mental conditions.
