The Ghana Maritime Authority donated a sum of thirty thousand Ghana cedis (GH30,000.00) and twenty 25kg bags of rice with three boxes of oil, each box containing four 5litre gallon of oil to the Street Academy in Accra on Monday, 15 October, 2018.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Academy, the Founder and Executive Director, Mr. Atta Lartey was full of immense appreciation to the Ghana Maritime Authority. ‘We feed the school children twice every day, and it is becoming difficult to sustain it. I am extremely happy that you opened your doors to us when we came knocking’ he said.

The Street Academy was established in 1986 by Mr. Atta Lartey, then a Prison Officer with the aim of training underprivileged street children by equipping them with skills that they can use to earn a living for themselves and thereby help reduce the rate of poverty.

As a non-Governmental Organization, the Academy relies solely on sponsorship and the support of individuals to cater for the needs of these children like feeding, payment of utilities, training of staff and provision of school uniforms etc.

Today, the Street Academy is a home to about 64 school children and has contributed to the training of many personalities notably Joseph Agbeko, Alfred Tetteh, Malik Jabel  among others.

Addressing the pupils, the Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Mr. Kwame Owusu admonished them to study hard and become great future leaders. ‘I have no doubt that you are the future leaders of this country, all what we have here is for you to feel comfortable and study hard’ he said.

Mr. Kwame Owusu also advised the volunteers to show love to the wards and stay true to their course to training the children the right way. He said given the right training in an atmosphere of love, the pupils would become more responsible and morally upright.
